CCTV

This qualification is designed for learners who wish to apply for a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence to work as a public space CCTV operator. It is aligned with the SIA’s specifications and has recently been updated to reflect new requirements.

Learners will develop the practical knowledge required to operate CCTV equipment effectively, monitor public space systems, maintain accurate logs, and provide clear evidential statements that meet current legal standards.

On successful completion of the qualification, learners will meet the knowledge-based requirement to apply for an SIA CCTV (Public Space Surveillance) licence, subject to the SIA’s additional criteria.

This award is suitable for individuals seeking employment in roles such as CCTV operator, control room operator, or public space surveillance officer within local authorities, shopping centres, transport hubs and other licensed environments.

What you'll learn

The role of a CCTV operator Understanding the responsibilities, limitations, and professional standards expected when monitoring public spaces.
Relevant legislation and regulation Including data protection law, privacy rights, human rights, and how these affect CCTV use in the UK, in line with Security Industry Authority requirements.
Data protection and information handling How to record, store, share, and dispose of images and information lawfully and securely.
Operational CCTV procedures Using CCTV equipment correctly, monitoring incidents, identifying suspicious behaviour, and following agreed protocols.
Incident response and reporting How to recognise incidents, gather evidence, complete accurate records, and work with the police and other authorities.
Communication and professionalism Effective communication, maintaining control room discipline, and dealing appropriately with members of the public and partner agencies.
Health, safety, and emergency procedures Understanding personal safety, workplace risks, and what to do during emergencies or major incidents.
Ethical use of CCTV Avoiding misuse, respecting privacy, and ensuring CCTV is used fairly, proportionately, and for its intended purpose.

Course content

The roles and responsibilities of a CCTV operator within the Private Security Industry Legal requirements relating to data protection, human rights and privacy legislation Communication skills required when working with colleagues, control rooms and emergency services Recognising and responding to incidents in line with operational procedures Dealing with conflict and challenging behaviour in a professional manner The importance of equality, diversity and inclusion in a public-facing role Identifying suspicious behaviour and applying dynamic risk assessment principles

Requirements

  • Bring valid photo ID (passport or driving licence)
  • Must be physically able to demonstrate basic intervention techniques
  • Arrive on time and complete the full day to qualify for certification

Assessment Results & Resit Policy

  • 99% of results will be received on the same day as your assessment.
  • Two free resits are available per unit if needed.
  • Same-day resits are available at an additional charge of £20 per unit.
  • If you already hold a valid SIA badge, please email a copy of your certificate to info@maindoorsecurity.com. You may not be required to attend the first day of the course, depending on your existing qualification. If you’re unsure, send your certificate across and we’ll confirm your attendance requirements.
